UGANDA & KENYA ADVENTURE

PHOTO SAFARI WITH EDWARD SELFE

This is a spectacular East African Adventure. 3 weeks exploring Uganda and Kenya….to trek with gorillas, follow wild chimps through their natural forest habitat, search for tree-climbing lions, watch Uganda kob lekking at their breeding grounds, boat along the game-rich Kazinga Channel, paddle quietly through the Mbamba swamps approaching shoebill storks, search for rhino among palm trees and mountains in Meru NP, spot lesser kudu shyly melting into the thornscrub, walk with wild dogs…and photograph the black huntress, Giza the melanistic leopard of Laikipia.

This tour has so many ‘highlights’, it’s hard to believe that they can all be part of one safari; but such is the diversity and richness of the East African ecosystem that we can enjoy all these hotspots in just 3 weeks, while still having time to absorb the thrills and unique experience on offer. With on-hand guidance from Edward, in a small group of just 4 guests, the photographic safari aspect will be carefully covered too; you will be offered timely photographic presentations along the route to help you prepare for what will feel like all-too-brief 1-hour encounters with the great apes.

The camps are chosen to provide us access to the best wildlife areas. Some are basic, some are more luxurious, but all are fit for purpose. Simplicity has been chosen by preference to allow funds to be focused towards activities and trekking permits.

Your itinerary starts at Entebbe International Airport, where Edward will meet you. Safari tour ends in Nairobi, from where you can arrange onward travel.

We will have a private vehicle and guide throughout our trip. Primate trekking is undertaken as part of a group of no more than 8 people; sometimes groups may be smaller (perhaps just our group of 5) but this cannot be guaranteed and will be determined on the morning of the trek. All other activities, such as game drives, boat cruises, expeditions to the Mbamba Swamps, walks at Bigodi Wetlands, the Kazinga Channel cruise and safaris in Kenya will be private for our group.

Most of the areas we are visiting are moderately-developed for tourism. Therefore, we will encounter other guests enjoying the same areas but it will not impact our experience. In the National Parks, off road driving is not allowed, but in the private concession of Laikipia, judicious off-roading is permitted. Walks in the forests may leave the trails.

1 night Karibu Guesthouse, Entebbe – FB, Visit to Botanical Gardens and a sunset cruise on Lake Victoria, 3 nights Turaco Tree Tops, Kibale NP – FB, 1 chimp trek and 1 chimp habituation experience, 2 wetland walks, 1 night walk, 1 night Ndali Lodge, Crater Lakes – FB, Activities at Ndali Lodge, Afternoon private cruise for our group on Kazinga Channel, 1 night Mweya Safari Lodge, 1 morning chimp trek at Kyambura Gorge, 2 nights Ishasha Wilderness Camp – FB+drinks, 4 game drives in Ishasha, Queen Elizabeth NP, 4 nights Mutanda Lake Resort – FB, 2 gorilla treks in Rushaga, 1 golden monkey experience in Mgahinga NP, Flight Kisoro to Entebbe with extra luggage allowance, 1 night Karibu Guesthouse, Entebbe – FB, 3 nights Meru Mobile Camp – FB, 4 nights Laikipia Wilderness Camp – FB, All road transfers between destinations & 1 flight as outlined above, All National Park fees and trekking permits, Private vehicle and guide throughout, Private photo tuition and guiding with Edward Selfe, drinks at Ishasha Wilderness Camp.

International flights, overnight hotel stays in Nairobi if needed (finalised during booking process), drinks (except drinking water), visas, travel and medical insurance, (optional) tips, excess baggage charges, personal calls, gratuities, personal purchases, or any activities not specified in the itinerary.

HIGHLIGHTS

Great Apes

During this tour, we will enjoy 3 chimp treks and 2 gorilla treks. Extended time in the company of these remarkable primates is the major focus of the Uganda part of the tour. You will have time to get great photos as well as absorb the special nature of this once-in-a-lifetime encounter.

Extraordinary Birds

As well as a dedicated trip into the Mbamba Swamps to seek out the spectacular shoebill, we will encounter wonderful birds throughout the trip; Great Blue Turaco, Vulturine Guinea-fowl, barbets, hornbills and many more.

Headline Plains Game

Our time in Ishasha (Uganda) and Meru & Laikipia (Kenya) promises great sightings of Ugandan kob, topi, lion, leopard, wild dogs and possible sightings of specials like lesser kudu, striped hyaena and rhino.

Black Leopard

Giza, the black leopardess of Laikipia, is a huge attraction of our time in Laikipia. We will dedicate time looking for her and ensuring wonderful photographs. It’s hard to think of a better way to finish off this trip!
