EXCLUSIVE BOTSWANA

PHOTO SAFARI WITH EDWARD SELFE

Botswana is a superb safari destination, covering huge desert systems, seasonal pans, hundreds of kilometres across, and the famous (and one-of-a-kind) Okavango Delta. The government’s policy to maintain a low-volume, high-quality safari offering means that safaris to this country are private, exclusive and very rewarding. Combined with excellent guides, classy camps and some of Africa’s best wildlife, this is a winning combination.

This safari was created to focus time in the prime safari areas around the delta, using renowned operator Kwando Safaris who have private concessions which give us the ability to drive off road, undertake night drives and enjoys safari in a private manner. We will use a combination of their camps to give us a range of experiences in Botswana’s north-west. An example itinerary might look like this: 4 nights at Lebala Camp in the Kwando concession gives us access to the large marshlands along the Zambezi’s tributaries and the dense game that resides there. 4 nights at Rra Dinare makes for a great period of safari sightings along the south-eastern border of Moremi Game Reserve and we conclude with a 4 night stay at Splash Camp, Kwando Safaris’ flagship camp in the Kwara Concession.

The tour can be scheduled between May & December, to enjoy the Delta as it changes from green after the rains, to brown as it dries up and then back to lush and swampy when the water arrives from Angola. May, June and December offer lower rates, and July – October offer the peak season safari that has made Botswana so famous.

May – September will coincide with the cool winter months when game is active all day, rather than only in the cooler morning and evening hours. The rains cease in March so the grass will have died back offering good visibility and sightings. Cool mornings, combined with dusty light, promise exciting photographic opportunities. October is hotter and drier, but game viewing is perhaps at its peak, and December is the start of the rains when incredible skies will add drama to the experience.

We can also easily add time in the Kalahari (at Kwando’s Tau Pan Camp) and in Nxai Pan (with Kwando) or the Mkgadikgadi Pans (with Camp Kalahari). Some of these areas are season-dependent, so please enquire and we can tell you more.

This is a top-end safari, using great camps in the best areas. Botswana has always maintained an exclusive safari experience and this trip will be special and memorable for all participants; from the staff welcome in the camps and the wonderful food, to the scenic small-aircraft flights over the delta and the world-class safari sightings. This is a trip to remember.

Edward will meet you in Maun airport where you will begin your safari. After 12 days in the bush, you will arrive in Maun where services end. Transport into and from Maun are not included but we can assist with arrangements.

This safari is exclusive by any measure. Small camps which are themselves often one of few in the whole concession ensures privacy of sightings that is highly appreciated by photographers who wish to invest in a sighting and wait for things to unfold. All the vehicles from the operator in that concession are in communication with each other; this increases the chances of finding memorable sightings, but also means that sightings occasionally have to be shared. This will rarely impact our experience.

Internal flights Maun > Okavango Delta > Maun. Full board accommodation, standard drinks, all transport in the National Parks and guided game viewing activities, pro-photographer guiding fees and informal photo processing sessions, National Park entrance fees, laundry, all airport transfers starting in Kasane and ending in Maun.

International flights, premium drinks, visas, travel and medical insurance, (optional) tips, excess baggage charges, personal calls, gratuities, personal purchases, or any activities not specified in the itinerary.

HIGHLIGHTS

Great Combination Safari

Superb light; the beautiful light of the southern African winter, combined with the grassland surroundings of the delta make a great canvas for playing with light to create interesting images.

Excellent Sightings

The Okavango Delta is rightly famous as one of the world’s finest wildlife reserves. The opportunities to see and photograph Africa’s wildlife are fantastic, and we have chosen camps in the game-rich private concessions surrounding the delta to maximise our game viewing.

Long Safari Days

Choosing the winter months, combined with Botswana’s climate, means that we have long safari mornings where subjects are active for far longer than in the hotter bushveld regions of Southern Africa. It’s not uncommon to find wild dogs, cheetah and lion still on the move past 09.00 giving long periods of viewing.

Memorable Experience

From the lodges and the stunning surroundings to the welcoming people and the first-class service, this is a special area which makes a lasting impression on any visitor. Be prepared for a wonderful wildlife and safari experience with superb photographic opportunities.

ACCOMMODATION

Lebala, Rra Dinare and Splash Camp all by Kwando Safaris

Lebala means ‘wide open spaces’, and the camp is located in the Kwando Reserve’s 232,000 hectares of private unfenced wilderness. Here, the southerly flowing Kwando River disappears into the vast marshland to the east, outside of the Kwando Reserve. Lebala sits on the floodplains of the Kwando River and the special ecosystem is home to a wide variety of Africa’s plains game such as zebra, wildebeest, impala, giraffe, and tsessebe.

The wonderful variety of wildlife also includes elephant, hippo, buffalo and the ever present predators of lion, cheetah and hyena. Lebala’s location away from the dense mopane woodland to the east of the Reserve facilitates the ease of traversing the concession looking for big game.

Rra Dinare is set in a private 272 km2 concession, adjacent to Moremi Game reserve on the south-eastern side of the Delta. It overlooks the Gomoti River and its flood plains and the camp has been designed to embrace the natural surroundings.

Splash Camp is situated in the heart of the Okavango Delta, within the Private Kwara Reserve. This brand new camp will offer a very relaxed, friendly and authentic atmosphere.

The area has long been known as Splash due to the huge water crossings that had to be negotiated to access the camp area.

The Kwara Reserve shares a 30km water boundary with the famous Moremi Game Reserve and its unique location boasts both permanent water and seasonal flood plains as well as extensive dry bush wilderness. Favoured by labyrinths of permanent water channels and secret islands this area offers the perfect delta experience, and is considered to be amongst the best in Botswana for game viewing and activities.
