EXCLUSIVE TANZANIA PHOTO SAFARI

PHOTO SAFARI WITH EDWARD SELFE

The massive grasslands, open woodlands and massive herds of the Serengeti need little introduction; worldwide, this area is known for the bountiful wildlife and the way that visitors feel when they explore the plains of the world’s most famous national park. But with the kudos come the crowds, a feature which has plagued the Serengeti’s reputation for many years.

However, choosing the more remote corners of the national park and selecting the quieter months offers visitors — and especially photographers — the chance to see this ecosystem in a private way that allows for creative photography, extended waits for hunting cheetahs and serene encounters with the nature of the area. In short, it’s a spectacular experience.

This 10-day trip spends 3 days in the Ndutu conservation area and then 7 in the Serengeti itself. Ndutu safaris are based along the lakeshore (where lions, flamingos and giraffes are found in good numbers) and inland away from the water on the vast plains where cheetah, Kori bustard and copious gazelles thrive. Ndutu is also a superb location for nesting Fisher’s lovebirds and multitude of other bird specials.

A week at Namiri Plains follows where photographers can expect multiple cheetah, lion and hyaena sightings, many with cubs or at the den. All of these species regularly hunt during the day and, when the lions finally settle, the cheetahs begin their hunting schedule, keeping photographers busy all day long. There are also opportunities to see leopard and the lesser-known aardwolf as well as serval and caracal.

But it is the landscapes of Namiri which make safaris in that area so special. It’s fun to explore the vast rolling grasslands (plenty with short grass which favours hunting cheetah) punctuated by tall, spectacular rocky outcrops. These rocky kopjes are a focal point for predators and it’s common to find lions hiding cubs in the caves and crevasses, or cheetahs using the height of the rocks to scan for prey.

There are many ways to visit the greater Serengeti area but for photographers, a combination of these two camps at this time of year is hard to beat. Have a look at the trip reports from previous years below (more are added after each trip) and get in touch if you would like to know more.

The safari begins with a night at RiverTrees in Arusha, where Edward will meet you. We will arrange your transfers from Kilimanjaro Airport to Rivertrees and then all onward transport. Safaris begin with the afternoon game drive. After our final morning on safari, we will arrange flights back to Kilimanjaro to co-ordinate with the remainder of your itinerary and any onward connections.

We are choosing to travel in the shoulder and green season where visitor numbers are low. Olakira is in the Ndutu sector of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where there are a number of other camps; occasionally high-value sightings will be shared with 3-4 other vehicles but we will always leave camp early and search for our own sightings to minimise this. Namiri Plains is in a very private area of the Serengeti where we will rarely share our sightings, except sometimes with vehicles from our own camp.

1 night at Rivertrees Arusha at the start of the trip on bed & breakfast basis. Internal flights from Arusha > Ndutu and Seronera > Kilimanjaro. Full board accommodation (except RiverTrees), standard drinks (except RiverTrees), all transport in the National Parks and guided game viewing activities, pro-photographer guiding fees and informal photo processing sessions, National Park entrance fees, laundry and all airport transfers. We also book an additional seat on the internal flights to allow for heavy camera gear.

International flights, premium drinks, visas, travel and medical insurance, (optional) tips, excess baggage charges, personal calls, gratuities, personal purchases, or any activities not specified in the itinerary.

SAFARI

HIGHLIGHTS

Massive Safari Area

The scale, magnificence and abundance of wildlife makes this trip a spectacle for visitors, even before we consider the photographic opportunities. Massive views, large herds and the special feeling of being totally immersed in the landscape.

Outstanding Predator Sightings

There’s possibly nowhere else in Africa which can match the predator sightings of this region: cheetah, leopard, caracal, lion, serval, African wild cat, spotted hyaena and aardwolf, not to mention avian predators in abundance including vultures, eagles and secretary birds.

Opportunities to show Animals in the Landscape

Open grassland, sparse forests and rocky outcrops all offer a great canvas for working on animalscapes and wider images that illustrate the environment as well as the subject.

Off-season Private Wildlife Safari

Choosing to travel in the shoulder season brings many advantages: fewer people, lower rates/longer stays and the chance of interesting stormy skies which are valuable for photographers in this area.

PREVIOUS TRIP REPORTS

FROM THIS AREA

Bespoke Ndutu & Namiri Plains | Mar & Apr 2024

The Serengeti holds lots of meaning for me; it featured in Willard Price’s books about Hal & Roger Hunt which I read when I was young; it is also famous as one of the world’s great wildlife areas, and the concept of Serengeti has even become part of English language to describe something rich and buzzing with life;

Bespoke Kenya & Tanzania | Mar 2025

I have travelled with these 4 guests many times over the last 8 years. We have explored all over Zambia, large parts of Botswana and this was my first adventure into East Africa with them. They had all been to Amboseli years before, but Tanzania was new for the 4 of them.
