KAFUE & BUSANGA ADVENTURE

KAFUE & BUSANGA ADVENTURE

PHOTO SAFARI WITH EDWARD SELFE

Kafue is a vast national park, covering nearly 30,000 sq km. It’s diverse, rich and very, very wild. To enjoy the many treasures that this park offers, we need to spend quality time in each of its special zones. This safari has been carefully crafted to give photographers all the time that they need in 3 different areas of the park, with excellent guides to ensure the best sightings.

The tour starts at Busanga Bush Camp, right in the heart of the Busanga Plains system at the northern end of the national park. This is a Wilderness Safaris camp opening straight out on to the flooded waterways of the plains ecosystem. Here lechwe and endless waterbirds are the attraction, with excellent chances of finding the lions that thrive on the rich ecosystem here. Early mornings are spent photographing against the rising mist in the cool months or watching lechwe and lions navigating across the drying channels in the hot months. The surroundings of this camp are simply stunning and the soft grassland is a beautiful backdrop for photographs.

Ntemwa-Busanga Camp is operated by Classic Zambia Safaris and is at the southern end of the Busanga Plains. This area is private, with no other camps around and gives us a wonderful continuation to our experience of the Busanga Plains system. Here we will enjoy good chances of leopard, lion, excellent sable antelope, roan antelope, oribi, reedbuck, puku and wildebeest. Hartebeest are common here too and there is a chance of cheetah if Nature is kind to us! The birding in the plains is also excellent with many unusual species that are not common in bushvelt areas.

Musekese Camp, our final camp, is superbly on a drying lagoon set back a few hundred meters from the crystal-clear Kafue River. The habitat here is bushland backing onto miombo woodland. This area is rich in leopard, elephant and the resident lion pride are often to be found resting under the trees around the camp’s main lagoon. We will conduct our safaris in a vehicle or by boat on the Kafue River. Game drives will bring us close to dense populations of plains game and give us excellent chances with predators. Boat cruises are scenic and relaxing, but also very valuable photographically for hippos, elephants, predators resting in the damp root systems of riparian trees and fantastic water birds.

We have booked these camps for their excellent locations and for the superb guiding standards offered at them all. The Kafue is a large park which warrants a long safari to explore its treasures, and this trip guarantees great experiences over these 9 nights.

The tour will start in Lusaka early on the first full day so overnight accommodation at Latitude 15 hotel in Lusaka the night before is included in the rate. Safari begins with the afternoon game drive. After our final morning on safari, we will return to Lusaka and an overnight at Latitude 15 has been included to facilitate a late flight out of Kafue back to Lusaka to maximise safari time on the final day.

The Kafue National Park is extremely large and undeveloped. This is particularly so in the areas that we are visiting. At Musekese, we will likely never share our sightings with anyone else, though if we do it will be with one other vehicle or boat from our camp. Ntemwa-Busanga camp is separate from the other Busanga camps so is very private. We will occasionally see other vehicles and share sightings with them. Busanga Bush Camp is in the busiest of the 3 areas, but the number of vehicles here will not impact our experience in any way.

Overnight accommodation at Latitude 15 in Lusaka before the tour starts to facilitate early departure to Kafue National Park. Flights between Lusaka and Kafue National Park at the start and end of the tour. An extra seat has been booked on both charter flights to cater for extra luggage allowances. Road transfers between the 3 camps. Full board accommodation, standard drinks, all transport in the National Park and guided game viewing activities, pro-photographer guiding fees and informal photo processing sessions, Kafue National Park entrance fees, conservation levies and laundry.

International flights, premium drinks, visas, travel and medical insurance, (optional) tips, excess baggage charges, personal calls, gratuities, personal purchases, or any activities not specified in the itinerary.

SAFARI

HIGHLIGHTS

Incredible Antelope

The Kafue has more antelope on record than any other park on the continent, numbering 21 in total. We are guaranteed great views of roan, puku, hartebeest, reedbuck, lechwe, oribi, wildebeest and sable during this safari.

Great Predators

The area around Musekese Camp is rich with game and therefore the predators that follow. The cats are very habituated to the vehicles and largely ignore us as we manoeuvre for the best position.

Stunning Landscapes and Scenery

The Busanga Plains ecosystem is absolutely beautiful; vast, complex and full of game, we will enjoy great sightings at both our “plains” camps and it is a fantastic counterpoint to the bush veld around Musekese.

Unusual Species

Kafue offers the chance to see some rarely-seen species as part of our visit; cheetah may be seen at any of the camps; serval are common on the plains and Egyptian mongoose can be spotted from Ntemwa. We can also see Pel’s fishing owl, African finfoot, African skimmer and two species of endangered crane.

ACCOMMODATION

Busanga Bush Camp

Busanga Bush Camp is a classy, stylish camp hidden among the trees of a wooded island in the middle of the Busanga Plains. It’s perfectly situated, on the crossing point of the main channel through the plains, giving access to both the eastern and western sides of the floodplain system.

The camp is small offering intimacy to couples and exclusivity to small groups. The food and service are outstanding and visitors are assured of the Wilderness Safaris’ approach to hospitality and standards.

Incredible spot in the wild! Busanga Bush Camp is such a stunning setting to sit and watch the wildlife cruise by on the open floodplain… The luxury safari tents are rustic and classy, with great views.

Ntemwa-Busanga Camp

Some three-hour game drive to the north of Musekese lies Ntemwa-Busanga Camp, a rustic bush camp on the southernmost reaches of Busanga Plains. This simple but charming camp is perfectly sited to make the most of the diverse Busanga Plains and its multitude of habitats, from riverine thickets in the south, the tree-lined edges and the productive, flooded grasslands in the centre and the variety of wildlife that inhabit them.

Thatched chalets are accompanied by open-air en-suite bathrooms at the rear, with flushing loos and warm bucket showers; the main area supplies power for charging cameras and other devices.

Four days at the Ntemwa-Busanga Bush camp was a highlight of our Zambian safari experiences. The four tent camp has all the necessities and a few comforts. The standard tent with an open air bathroom has a flush loo and a hanging bush shower, hot water delivered whenever requested. Four days was barely enough to explore the varied landscape of the vast plains, observe the herds of diverse antelope, and marvel at the abundance of bird life.

Musekese

Perched on the edge of a spectacular lagoon hidden away from the outside world, Musekese is making a name for itself with expert guiding, exceptional food and phenomenal wildlife.

Musekese Camp has only five chalets taking a maximum of ten people and we will have a private guide and vehicle so that we can be entirely assured of activities taken at our own pace and interest.

Rooms at Musekese Camp are spacious and comfortable with all the necessities, including flushing loos and warm bucket showers under a mix of canvas and thatch. All power requirements are drawn from a well-configured solar set up, and whilst there are no charging facilities in the rooms, the main area has power 24/7 to keep all your devices fully charged and drinks ice cold.

What a wonderful camp to spend our time in Kafue NP!

We stayed in a comfortable tent with a kingsize bed, a bucket shower filled with cold, warm, hot water as often as we liked and a terrace with a view. The food was amazing and we were surprised about all the deliciousness that came out of the kitchen every day. We would really love to go back here someday!
