The meandering Luangwa River carves an ever-changing course leaving ox-bow lagoons which support vast quantities of wildlife. Safaris have been running in this area for over 50 years, so the game has become very accustomed to vehicles and visitors. This allows photographers to spend time at sightings and discuss ideas with a guide. We use open-topped safari vehicles which give a 360 degree view and the most immersive experience of the park.

OUTSTANDING BIG GAME SIGHTINGS
The South Luangwa boasts an impressive list of large mammals which includes lions, wild dogs, plentiful elephants, Thornicroft’s giraffes and Cookson’s wildebeest. The last two are Luangwa endemics, found nowhere else on Earth. Added to all this, there is certainly nowhere better in Africa to photograph leopards.

Visitors to Luangwa always comment on the park’s beautiful and varied landscapes. The diversity of habitats is astonishing, from riverine forest and groves of Ebony trees, to dry floodplains and meandering riverbeds. Perhaps most dramatic of all are the natural drainage gullies which give predators ideal cover when hunting.

The Luangwa ecosystem is remote and undeveloped, giving visitors an insight into safari of years-gone-by when explorers were first pulling back the veil of Africa’s vast wildernesses. Some areas of the park are getting a little busier, but in the more remote areas – like Lion Camp, Nsefu & Kafunta – it’s possible to spend hours in the bush and meet few other people.
