I recently had a group of guests who were mad-keen bird enthusiasts and hoped to get great sightings of as many species as possible. We had a lot of fun tracking down some of the Luangwa’s specialities and visiting some of the less well-known areas.
On the last evening, we decided to hunt for Owls which we had missed up to that point. An area of the park around Mushroom Lagoon gave us some great results.
As it was beginning to go dark, we spotted this Pearl Spotted Owlet in a Sausage Tree near the road. He was quite relaxed and allowed us to approach.
We found this Verreaux’s Eagle Owl on an exposed branch nearby the water. It has just finished feeding on a small rodent so still had some blood around its face.
Moments later, a Pel’s Fishing Owl was spotted right at the edge of the water. In the spotlight, the owl spotted a frog which it quickly consumed. I had never managed to get so close to a Pel’s before.
