I was lucky recently to find a leopard hidden in a tree early in the afternoon. She was very sleepy and had a full belly so we knew she wouldn’t go far until it got nearly dark. We continued our drive and returned to the area as it was cooling down.
While watching elephants feeding on the sand, I saw a couple of antelopes raise their heads and look towards the steep river bank. Knowing that there was a small puddle of water there, I was sure that the leopard had come down from the tree to go for a drink. Indeed she had, and we drove over to find her just scaling the river bank once more. Seeing us, she stopped and posed for some time, contemplating where to go.
She wandered around, scent marking occasionally and crossed over the road in front of us. Turning back, she then scouted for a large tree where she could rest again until it was completely dark.
